SPCP Fiesta! The 21st Annual Convention & Trade Show

SPCP Fiesta! The 21st Annual Convention & Trade Show
by Jeanine McTasney, CPCP – Albuquerque Liaison and Beth Plancon, Meeting Planner

Albuquerque welcomes the SPCP Convention in March 17-19, 2012 with its grand New Mexico charm. Founded in 1706 as one of the nation’s oldest communities, the Land of Enchantment offers its rich cultural history, old town charm, and a unique New Mexican cuisine.

With an elevation of 5312 feet above sea level, Albuquerque is marked as the highest metropolitan city in the United States. Natives and visitors alike enjoy its outdoor mountain sports throughout the seasons, many traveling to New Mexico’s capital Santa Fe in the winter months for the snow sports at Santa Fe Ski.

A favorite spot close to our host hotel, the Hyatt Regency Albuquerque, is the famous Old Town Square - the city’s cultural center, with five museums and more than 100 shops, galleries and restaurants. Trendy and charming restaurants also line the streets of the old Route 66, complete from family owned diners to fresh sushi restaurants. A quick drive to Nob Hill boasts chic night life entertainment with casinos, bars, and lounge restaurants.

Albuquerque, the hot air ballooning capital of the world, offers superb conditions for balloon flights year-round for a different and exciting attraction. You can also visit the Albuquerque International Balloon Museum. Don’t miss the stunning views of the city from Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway, as it slowly climbs the 10,378-foot peak of the mountains that form Albuquerque’s eastern border.

This year, Albuquerque’s Restaurant Week also occurs during our SPCP convention. The Duke City’s (Albuquerque is sometimes referred to as the Duke City) finest dining establishments offer discounted dinners, spirits, chef demonstrations, and multi-course dinners in and around Albuquerque.

The weather will be fantastic for this Convention, and the sights in and around the hotel area are beautiful. The Rail Runner depot, the train to Santa Fe, is a block away from the hotel. A six dollar round trip fee takes you into the oldest capital city and one of the most charming historical towns in the US, hence the title, Land of Enchantment.

Now that we have covered some the fun and exciting things to do in Albuquerque, let’s look at all the great presentations this convention has to offer! The two-day Train the Trainer class by Marjorie Grimm, CPCP and Liza Sims, CPCP kicks off the event on Wednesday and Thursday. This is a ‘must’ attend class if you are thinking of becoming a trainer, or if you are already a trainer and it has been awhile since you have taken the class. This training class is always being updated to include new ideas and techniques.

A CPCP Review Class will again be offered by SPCP Trainer Member Jeanee Lusby, CPCP. This class proved to be highly successful last year based on the significantly increased pass rate.

On Friday David Vidra, LPN will present the Bloodborne Pathogens Standards class; a class that always includes new and evolving information and should be taken regularly to remain up-to-date on this industry topic. Our pre-convention specialty program this year will be a Camouflage Class, presented by Mary Jane Haake, CPCP. Mary Jane will discuss techniques used to work on and camouflage skin damaged from traumas such as burns, infections, surgical procedures and more. This is one class you do not want to miss and attendance is limited, so sign up early!

Saturday will be the vendor day, with the entire day focusing on just the vendor room and their products and services. Vendor presentations will run throughout the entire day on Saturday culminating with the annual networking reception, SPCP Fiesta!

The first full day of lectures will begin on Sunday, with Penny Rudy, CPCP and “The Real Man’s Brow & the Alopecia Client From Start to Finish.” She will discuss ways to create natural appealing male brows and how to restore confidence in those who have lost their eyebrows due to Alopecia. Following will be Attorney, Joanna Shanks, Esq, discussing standards of care, expectations on the part of consumers, legal liability which may accrue should a practitioner fail to perform at the standard of care to a degree which constitutes legal negligence, as well as other insurance issues.

Kicking off the afternoon will be the Round Table Discussions, moderated by Lifetime Member, Pat Gauthier, CPCP. Convention attendees, in group format, will be given a scenario to discuss and formulate solutions that will be presented to the other attendees. This is a great way to learn, hear, and share new ideas from your peers. This interactive session will be followed by the duo of Kate Ciampi, CPCP and David Vidra, LPN with a must-attend presentation on procedural infection control put into practice. Wrapping up the first day will be our popular Panel of Experts, featuring David Vidra, LPN, Penny Rudy, CPCP and Pat Gauthier, CPCP.

Monday morning will start off with one of our all-time favorite returning speakers, Lana Duke. This year she will be enlightening us with “Low Cost Branding for Big Results,” providing tips on developing a unique, highly profitable brand, and ways to do that at low cost. Jeanine McTasney, CPCP will discuss working in a regulated environment and how you can protect your right to practice.

After the Annual Members Meeting and luncheon, Jeffery Segal, CPCP will present facial morphology and makeup design, which will help you identify the right shapes to put with the right faces, and how to create a look that makes each client feel their natural best. Judith Culp, CPCP will follow with her presentation, “Lovely, Luscious Lips.” With a “SPCP Style” hands-on presentation, Judith will demonstrate lip color with a digital machine, and the tips and tricks she has developed to achieve the beautiful lips everyone desires. Monday afternoon closes with a highly requested second session of Panel of Experts, featuring Jeffery Segal, CPCP, Judith Culp, CPCP and Kate Ciampi, CPCP. This will be followed by our Annual Raffle hosted by your Board of Directors.

We are so excited to see you in the beautiful town of Albuquerque, New Mexico at the 21st Annual Convention and Trade Show! Make your plans to attend. Registration and hotel information will be available soon.
